People's Artist of Azerbaijan Tofig Aghababayev passes away

Tofig Aghababayev, People's Artist of Azerbaijan and the first Chief Artist of Baku, has died at the age of 97, SİA reports.

He was born in Baku in 1928. The artist created monumental works in the fields of decorative and applied art, graphics and painting. The triptych "Azerbaijani Lyric" (ceramics, 1960, Azerbaijan Art Museum), the mosaic panel "Azerbaijani Circus" in the Baku State Circus were awarded the prize of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1967. In 1966-1968, he worked as the Chief Artist of Baku. Tofig Aghababayev's works are kept in the Azerbaijan State Museum, the Fund of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan, the US Museum, London, Canada and many other museums, private galleries.

In 1992, he was awarded the honorary titles of Honored Artist of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and in 2006, People's Artist. By the relevant Decree of President Ilham Aliyev, Tofig Aghababayev was awarded the President's personal scholarship in 2008, and in 2023, he was awarded the People's Artist “Shohret” Order.
