Turkish defense minister says he believes implementation of grain deal will continue
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar on Tuesday expressed confidence that the implementation of the grain deal will continue.
"There’s continued progress in that area. Taking stock of the information at hand, we believe the deal will continue," he told reporters in Ankara.
Akar also said Turkey expects Russian answer on the situation around the grain deal over the next two days.
"There is an agreement between the sides that only grain should leave the ports, and the corridor should be used for humanitarian aid. Mr. [Russian Defense Minister Sergey] Shoigu continues to converse within the government based on the information we have provided. We expect them to respond today or tomorrow. We reminded our vis-a-vis that these efforts shouldn’t be disrupted, shouldn’t cause any problems, and we shouldn’t go back to the start again," he said.
In other comments, he said Turkish-flagged ships will continue exporting food from Ukraine even as Russia suspended its participation in the grain deal.
"There are no issues for Turkish-flagged ships to leave. They will continue to leave," he told reporters.
