EC may submit proposals for new sanctions against Russia to EU members this week

Nuclear energy and an EU oil-price cap are unlikely to find their way into the seventh sanction package proposal, several EU diplomats said after consultations for a seventh Russia sanctions package over the weekend left some more hawkish member states dissatisfied, SİA informs referring to Euractiv.

Over the weekend, the European Commission held consultations with EU member states on the next package of Russia sanctions, on which the bloc’s executive is expected to present a formal proposal to capitals later this week.

Approval is expected before EU foreign ministers meet for a regular meeting in mid-October, an EU official said.

Measures proposed by the bloc’s Russia hawks would, among others, include targeting nuclear, luxury goods and Russia’s IT and tech sectors as well as excluding more banks from the SWIFT messaging system, according to a position paper seen by Euractiv.
