Multiple strikes on Kherson as Ukraine battles to retake region

Ukraine's military says it has destroyed key Russian control points, weapons and warehouses as it tries to take back occupied Kherson.

It follows weeks of Ukrainian attacks aimed at cutting off Russian forces in the southern region, which has been controlled by Moscow since March. Russia is reorganising its forces around Kherson, the UK’s Ministry of Defence says, as Ukraine goes on the counter-offensive. Moscow claims Ukraine suffered heavy losses and their operation there has been a failure.

The US state department says it cannot confirm the counter-offensive starting, but it has seen an "uptick" of military activity in area. Meanwhile East Africa, a region in desperate need of food, is receiving its first shipload of Ukrainian grain since Russia's invasion.

The vessel, the Brave Commander, has docked in Djibouti but has yet to start unloading its cargo.
