New York Governor declares State of Emergency over monkeypox

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state disaster emergency Friday night over the continued spread of monkeypox.

SIA reports with reference to foreign press that, this was announced on the website of the State Administration.

She said the emergency declaration would lead to swifter response and better vaccination distribution. It came a day after the New York State Commissioner of Health declared monkeypox an imminent threat to public health.

“I am declaring a State Disaster Emergency to strengthen our ongoing efforts to confront the monkeypox outbreak,” Hochul stated on Friday.

Hochul noted that 1 out of every 4 cases of monkeypox infection in the USA falls on the share of New York state.

About 5,000 cases of monkeypox have been recorded in the United States so far.

New York (1,345), California (799) and Illinois (396) have the highest number of cases.
