Droupadi Murmu becomes India's first tribal woman president

In the fight for the position of the country's new head of state, Draupadi Murmu surpassed all her rivals.

Ms Murmu won over his opponent Yashwant Sinha (380,177 votes) by collecting more than 64 percent of the votes (676,803).

In India, the president has relatively limited powers. Important decisions regarding state policy in the country are made by the government and its head, the prime minister.
