Mass sulfur gas poisoning in Chile

About 80 people have been poisoned by sulfur dioxide in an industrial zone in the Chilean state of Quintero.

SIA reports quoting APA that 45 of the poisoned are schoolchildren. The mayor said that the volume of sulfur gas in the air of the industrial zone is 5 times higher than normal.

The ecological situation in the city worsened after the construction of the industrial zone in 1958. There are 4 thermal power plants, several refineries and a copper processing plant in a small area.

Greenpeace calls the area "Chile's Chernobyl."
