Gold mine collapsed: 12 people died

Twelve women have died in the collapse of an illegal gold mine on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

A statement from the police department said: "A gold mine in Mandailing Natal, Sumatra, has collapsed. The bodies of 12 female miners were found as a result of search and rescue operations after the accident. Two women were rescued. The mine operated illegally by 14 women has been closed.

Thousands of people in Indonesia are forced to work in illegal mines to earn a living, despite the risk of serious injuries and even death.
