An Ebola epidemic has been declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Ecuador province.

A 31-year-old man who died in the Ecuadorian capital, Mbandaka, has been diagnosed with the Ebola virus, Health Minister Jean-Jacques Mbungani said in a statement. 74 people who came in contact with them were quarantined. Due to all this, an Ebola epidemic has been declared in the province of Ecuador.

The Ebola virus, which causes a type of hemorrhagic fever, first appeared in 1976 in Nzara, Sudan, and Yambuku, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The disease is so named because the epidemic started in a village near the Ebola River.

The Ebola virus spread to West Africa in December 2013, infecting 30,000 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone between 2014 and 2017, and more than 11,000 of these patients died.
