9 million people in South Sudan are on the verge of starvation

Nearly 9 million South Sudanese are in dire need of food aid due to rising food prices on the world market and the actions of armed groups.

The statement came from Nicholas Haysom, head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), SIA reports.

"Two-thirds of South Sudan's population, or about 9 million people - 4.6 million of them children - need help to survive. Food shortages will be felt in different parts of the country, "he told a news conference in the African capital, Cuba.
