Tennessee munitions plant explosion leaves over dozen missing as investigation continues
A massive explosion devastated a munitions facility in rural Tennessee on Friday, reducing the site to rubble and leaving at least 18 people unaccounted for, according to local authorities, SİA reports.
The blast tore through the Accurate Energetic Systems plant, which manufactures and tests explosives for the U.S. military.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis described the destruction as total, saying, “There’s nothing to describe. It’s gone.” He called the scene one of the worst in his career, noting that several local families he personally knows were affected.
Officials initially reported nineteen people missing, but later confirmed that one individual believed to be at the site was located safely at home. Sheriff Davis referred to the remaining missing workers as “souls,” as officials continued to notify families.
The explosion, which occurred around 7:45 a.m., sent debris flying across a wide area. Aerial images showed smoldering ruins, while residents as far as fifteen miles away reported feeling the blast. The plant, located in the Bucksnort area about sixty miles southwest of Nashville, includes eight buildings spread over a wooded hillside.
Emergency responders were forced to delay entry into the facility due to ongoing smaller detonations, said an Advanced EMT from Hickman County. Investigators are still working to identify the cause of the explosion.
