MEDIA and Press Council express condolences over death of TRT correspondent in Gaza

The Media Development Agency (MEDIA) and the Press Council have expressed condolences over the death of Yahya Barzak, an employee of the Turkish TV channel TRT, in the Gaza Strip.

According to SİA, a statement posted on MEDIA"s official X page said:

"We extend our deepest condolences to the Turkish public, the TRT team, and the family of journalist Yahya Barzak, who tragically lost his life while carrying out his professional duty in Gaza. The death of a TRT employee is a heavy loss and a great tragedy. This incident once again highlights how dangerous and risky the work of a journalist is, especially in conflict zones, and raises the issue of ensuring the safety of media representatives in extreme conditions."

The statement emphasized that the tragedies experienced by journalists in hotspots contradict the fundamental principles of freedom of speech, the right to express opinions, and access to information.

"Unfortunately, the international community proves powerless in the face of such dangerous trends. Yahya Barzak has become another victim of this helplessness. Azerbaijani journalism, which has also endured two wars during the years of independence, knows the pain of such losses. The members of the Press Council, expressing deep sorrow over the death of Yahya Barzak, wish for a world free of wars, conflicts, and the deaths of journalists. We sincerely extend our condolences to the entire media community of brotherly Türkiye, the TRT team, as well as the colleagues and family of the deceased, sharing their grief and wishing them strength and patience."

Photojournalist and freelance TRT correspondent Yahya Barzak was killed as a result of an Israeli airstrike in the so-called "safe zone" in central Gaza.
