Iran on Sunday denounced the reinstatement of United Nations sanctions targeting its nuclear program, calling the move “illegal and baseless” after the collapse of negotiations with Western powers and recent Israeli and US strikes on its nuclear facilities, SİA reports citing foreign media.
Officials in Tehran said the country is weighing possible countermeasures.
The sanctions, which restrict activities tied to Iran’s nuclear and missile programs, were reimposed through the “snapback” mechanism in the 2015 nuclear agreement. “All states must avoid legitimizing this unlawful decision,” the Iranian foreign ministry said, warning that any attempt to infringe on its national interests would be met with a “decisive and proportional” response.
Amid discussions on how to respond, Iranian lawmaker Ismail Kowsari told the state-affiliated Young Journalists Club that parliament may consider withdrawing from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, though a final decision has yet to be made.
