Presidential Assistant: Main goal is to turn the South Caucasus into a space for cooperation
“The main goal is to turn the South Caucasus into a space for cooperation, said Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan - Head of the Department for Foreign Policy Issues of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan, during his speech at the 6th Caspian Business Forum in New York on the topic “Along the Middle Corridor: Connectivity, Finance and Energy,” APA reports from New York.
“More than 50 million tons of cargo growth is expected along the Middle Corridor. To manage this growth, we are making additional investments and ensuring the synchronization of the Baku Port with the Kazakh port. The Baku Port has a cargo throughput capacity of 25 million tons per year, and work is underway to expand these capabilities. However, this is not just a technical issue,” Hikmet Hajiyev said.
Speaking about the importance of the Middle Corridor, the Presidential Assistant noted that Azerbaijan has almost completed its "homework" in this direction: "Starting in 2020, the implementation of the railway project stretching from Baku to Zangilan and the Armenian border has been launched. This project will be completed in mid-2026. Currently, work is underway on the 42-kilometer Zangezur segment located in Armenia, and our partners from the United States are participating in it. The third segment covers Nakhchivan. Additional investments are being made in this area, and we invite other international partners, including European countries, to cooperate. In addition, new projects have been launched in parallel with this corridor in Turkey. As a result of these initiatives, an integrated transport circle with railways and highways will be formed in the region and will bring additional economic benefits."
Hikmet Hajiyev stated that the main goal is to turn the South Caucasus into a place of cooperation, not a place of confrontation: "Historically, this region has suffered greatly from conflicts and wars. However, we intend to change this reality. Unfortunately, there are two important geopolitical tensions in our immediate neighborhood. However, we are trying to avoid the impact of these tensions and ensure an environment of stability, prosperity and cooperation in our region. Azerbaijan won the war, and now we are winning peace. This is our main goal. Azerbaijan is mobilizing all its capabilities to establish lasting peace and cooperation in the region."
