Lead Negotiator: Many countries saw Azerbaijan as bridge at COP29

"Azerbaijan provides significant support to the institutionalization of the Non-Aligned Movement," said Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev during an expanded meeting of the Committee on International Relations and Inter-Parliamentary Relations of the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament), in discussions on the topic “The Rise of the Global South and the West: Azerbaijan’s Role, New Opportunities for Cooperation and Development”, APA reports.

“I must mention the practical steps taken by President Ilham Aliyev against colonialism. At the opening ceremony of COP29, President Ilham Aliyev’s position on this issue was met with sincere approval by all countries. After COP29, Azerbaijan saw increased engagement with Middle Eastern and African countries.

One of the key outcomes of COP29 was the identification of $300 billion — the amount to be paid from the Global North to the Global South. In Baku, we succeeded in reaching a consensus among 198 parties. This stems from the respect toward Azerbaijan and its independent, neutral policy. Many countries saw Azerbaijan as a state that plays the role of a bridge,” the deputy minister added.
