Today marks the 33rd anniversary of the establishment of the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Azerbaijan, according to SİA.
In December 1991, the 5th Division of the Internal Troops of the former USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs in Baku was disbanded, and three military units with a total of 2,500 personnel were transferred under the command of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
From that moment, the formation of the Internal Troops of Azerbaijan began, based on the military unit stationed in the Balajari settlement.
On March 12, 1992, servicemen of the Internal Troops units located in Balajari, Sumgayit, and Ganja engaged in combat against Armenian aggressors to ensure the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. During the First Karabakh War, Internal Troops fighters fought in the villages of Papavand, Galaychilar, Manikli, Bash Guneypeya, Janata, and Gulyatag in the Aghdam district. The first martyrs among the servicemen were Sergeant Khatamkhan Babayev, Lieutenant Rafig Ismayilov, and Senior Lieutenant Ruber Safaraliyev. The date of the first battle, March 12, is considered the Day of the Internal Troops.
A corresponding decree was signed by the National Leader Heydar Aliyev on March 9, 1995.
During the First Karabakh War, the settlements of the Aghdam, Aghdara, and Fuzuli districts were defended by the personnel of the Aghdam Regiment of the Internal Troops.
Between 1992 and 1994, a total of 680 Internal Troops servicemen of the MIA became martyrs, five went missing, and 1,177 were wounded. Nine individuals were awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan, eight of them posthumously.
Internal Troops personnel also fought during the 44-day Patriotic War in the fall of 2020.
From the very first days of the Patriotic War, Internal Troops servicemen participated in fierce battles for the liberation of Murovdag, Jabrayil, and Fuzuli districts, as well as the town of Hadrut and the city of Shusha. Over the course of 44 days, 66 Internal Troops servicemen of the Ministry of Internal Affairs were killed in combat, 346 were wounded, and four were awarded the title of Hero of the Patriotic War, one of them posthumously.
During local anti-terrorist operations carried out by the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan in Karabakh on September 19-20, 2023, 12 Internal Troops servicemen lost their lives.
The heroism and bravery of many courageous sons who perished in battle were highly honored, and their names were immortalized. In their memory, 24 schools, seven districts and streets, one bridge, and a cultural center were named.
The Internal Troops, subordinated to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, are a military formation within the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan.
Fulfilling their assigned duties, the Internal Troops protect the interests of individuals, society, and the state, as well as the constitutional rights and freedoms of citizens from criminal and other illegal acts.
Currently, Internal Troops military units are stationed in five cities and nine districts of Azerbaijan. Additionally, there are nine special forces detachments within the IT, primarily composed of warrant officers and officers.
Since November 15, 2013, the Commander of the Internal Troops has been Lieutenant General Shahin Mammadov, and since February 15, 2018, the Chief of Staff has been Major General Tofig Huseynov.
