Georgian parliament to discuss new media bill

The Georgian parliament will discuss a new media bill this week, SİA informs.

The legislative initiative will be based on the media legislation of the United Kingdom and will establish the protection of objectivity in the media, as well as standards of journalistic ethics.

Irakli Kirtskhalia, a representative of the ruling Georgian Dream party, deputy chairman of the parliamentary faction, told journalists that the new bill is designed to prevent the spread of disinformation, slander, destructive and hate speech in the media.

"In recent years and especially in recent months, we have been hearing calls for disinformation, slander and destructive speech from some media organizations, especially party-oriented media. It is necessary to regulate such situations and improve the media space. The new bill serve precisely this purpose," Kirtskhalia emphasized.

Further discussions will be held on the details of the bill and its scope.
