Western Azerbaijan Community demands Armenia respect Azerbaijanis' right of return
The Western Azerbaijan Community (WAC) has demanded that the Armenian government respect the right of return, immediately end its armament policy, and remove territorial claims from its main documents, according to a statement, SİA informs.
In his interview with Armenpress News Agency on December 19, 2024, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed several harmful and untrue statements regarding bilateral relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the Western Azerbaijan issue.
The community stated that Pashinyan's attempt to present Western Azerbaijanis' return to their homeland as a territorial claim is groundless:
"First, we should note that the prime minister's attempt to present Western Azerbaijanis' return to their homeland as a territorial claim and his objection to the term 'Western Azerbaijan' is completely baseless. It should be emphasized that the term 'Western Azerbaijan,' which covers the former Iravan Khanate, Zangazur, and other regions where Azerbaijanis lived for centuries and were subjected to total ethnic cleansing by Armenia, is a term used by Azerbaijanis who lived in that area within their right to self-identification and is based on historical facts."
In the statement, the Western Azerbaijan Community noted that it strives to achieve the return goal peacefully, within the framework of international law norms and principles, including respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty of states:
"In this regard, it should be particularly noted that the community officially approached the Armenian government with a dialogue proposal. The fact that Western Azerbaijanis, who were subjected to ethnic cleansing, discrimination, and violation of property and other rights by the Armenian government, took the first step by initiating dialogue shows their commitment to reconciliation and peace. It is regrettable that Armenia has left the community's dialogue proposal unanswered."
The statement noted that Pashinyan tries to explain his armament policy as a sovereign choice.
"We would like to remind Pashinyan that Armenia, where revanchist and radical ideology is deeply rooted, cannot handle military power responsibly. Given this and Armenia's aggressive past, its free armament cannot be allowed."
The community stated that the prime minister is not interested in signing a peace treaty:
"Pashinyan's refusal to remove the territorial claim reflected in the Armenian Constitution, and moreover, his claim that the Azerbaijani Constitution contains territorial claims against Armenia, shows that he is not interested in signing a peace treaty."
