In Russia, people continue to remember the national leader of the Azerbaijani people, Heydar Aliyev, as an outstanding statesman, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin said at an event in Moscow dedicated to the memory of Heydar Aliyev, Report informs.
Galuzin noted that as the leader of the Azerbaijan SSR, Heydar Aliyev confidently led the republic along the path of creation and progress, which led to his appointment to the high position of First Deputy Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers.
"And here, of course, Heydar Aliyev played a huge role in the socio-economic development of the Soviet Union. As First Deputy Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers, he oversaw a number of crucial areas. The large-scale infrastructure project of the Baikal-Amur Mainline construction should be particularly highlighted. This was truly the project of the century, and this mainline remains today a crucial transport artery not only for Russia but for all of Eurasia," said Galuzin.
The Russian diplomat also noted that relations between Russia and Azerbaijan are developing intensively, with both countries implementing mutually beneficial projects in various fields.
"In the outgoing year, significant steps were taken to develop the western branch of the North-South international transport corridor, connecting Russia and southern ports of Iran through Azerbaijan's territory," Galuzin added.
