Türkiye awaits US move on F-16 sales after Sweden NATO bid

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that Türkiye is currently awaiting approval from the USA for the sale of F-16s to Ankara, SIA reports with reference to foreign media.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is also closely monitoring the process of sending F-16s to Türkiye. It was mentioned that the response from the US Congress will determine the procedures, such as repair, maintenance, and other related steps. This decision is crucial for demonstrating Türkiye's stance to Western countries, as stated by the head of state.

After Türkiye's Grand National Assembly approved Sweden's NATO membership, US President Joe Biden has urged Congress to approve the sale of F-16s to Ankara.

In October 2021, Türkiye officially requested the purchase of 40 F-16 "Block 70" combat aircraft and 79 modernization kits from the United States. While the US administration has previously expressed support for the sale, an official notification to Congress is still pending.
