UN Secretary-General António Guterres very alarmed by deteriorating situation in Ecuador

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the recent events in Ecuador, SIA refers to a statement made by UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric during his daily press conference.

Dujarric also noted that Guterres had a telephone conversation with Ecuador's permanent representative to the UN. During the call, Guterres expressed concern about the deteriorating situation in the country and extended his solidarity to the people of Ecuador.

Dujarric clarified that while there is currently no request for assistance from the UN, Guterres believes that the Ecuadorian government can handle the situation. Recent events include the armed raid of a television studio and the forced detention of students at a university in Guayaquil.

13 people involved in the TV studio incident were detained by security forces. These incidents are a result of the ongoing domestic security crisis in Ecuador, which led the government to declare a 60-day state of emergency on January 9th after the escape of notorious gang leader Adolfo Macias Salazar, also known as Fito, and several other inmates from a prison in Guayas.
