Peru to declare state of emergency on its border with Ecuador

Unrest in Ecuador has prompted Peru's government to declare a state of emergency along its border, while Brazil, Colombia and Chile expressed support for Ecuador's government, SIA refer to Reuters' report on Wednesday.

Ecuador faced a series of violent incidents on Tuesday, including gunmen who attacked a television studio, after President Daniel Noboa designated 22 gangs as terrorist organizations and military targets.

Police arrested 13 gunmen who "invaded" the TV studio "TC" during the live broadcast, while elsewhere at least seven police officers were kidnapped and there were several explosions across the country.

Noboa, who took office in November promising to end drug-trafficking violence, declared a 60-day state of emergency on Monday in response to prison violence.

Fito, the leader of Ecuador's main gang Los Choneros, escaped from prison on Sunday. This is believed to have fueled the unrest.
