More than 50,000 Ukrainians have lost one or more limbs since start of the war
During the 17-month long largescale war with Russia, around 50,000 Ukrainians have lost one or more limbs.
The Wall Street Journal wrote with reference to the calculations of the German company Ottobock, which is the world's largest producer of prosthetics, SIA reports.
The Wall Street Journal report said the actual number of disabled amputees may be higher because prostheses take time, and some victims wait weeks or even months after being injured to be amputated. In addition, the publication does not rule out that the price of prostheses can be increased to 50,000 euros.
The Ukrainian authorities pay up to 20,000 euros for each wounded soldier, and civilians often do not receive treatment at all. And in some cases, most of the wounded are forced to turn to charities.
One of such organizations, the "Hope" Foundation in Kyiv, estimates that the number of Ukrainians seriously injured in the war has reached 200,000. About 20,000 of them have received injuries that required amputation.
The Ukrainian authorities, much like the Russian authorities, hide information about the losses of their servicemen.
