Candidate for U.S Ambassador to Azerbaijan : Cooperation with Azerbaijan serves our national interests

"If my candidacy for this position is confirmed, I will support the United States' efforts to help Azerbaijan and Armenia reach a just and lasting peace agreement," Mark Libby, candidate for US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, said in his speech during the hearings in the Senate, APA reports.

"If my candidacy is approved, I promise to work closely with this Committee and all members of Congress to protect the United States' interests in Azerbaijan.

Serving and safeguarding US citizens is the primary responsibility of all US ambassadors, and if my candidacy for this position is approved, this will be my first priority."

The diplomat stressed that he will support the efforts of the United States for peace in the region: "If confirmed, I will support the US efforts to help Azerbaijan and Armenia reach a fair and lasting peace agreement. The sides have left a legacy of pain and distrust as a result of this tragic conflict.

Addressing issues of territorial integrity, sovereignty, and the rights and security of everyone living in the region is critical to any sustainable and dignified peace. There is no military solution to this conflict. The United States must continue to condemn violence and threats of violence. But with the help of the United States and our partners in Europe, the sides are closer than ever to reaching an agreement. If I am approved, I undertake to assist them (the sides- ed.) in accomplishing this by working actively and decisively in Baku. However, signing the peace agreement is merely the first step. If confirmed, I will lead the embassy in Baku in supporting the final settlement's implementation, and the effective implementation of the peace deal will pave the groundwork for deeper relations between the US and Azerbaijan. This will stabilize the region and suppress adversaries seeking to exploit the conflict to expand their malign influence. The peace treaty will allow us to take our already fruitful partnership with Azerbaijan to the next level. Our partnership with Azerbaijan in counterterrorism, border security, energy security, and maritime security serves US national interests and security. If I am confirmed for this job, I intend to increase our efforts in these areas."
