Member of Seimas: Political dialogue between Lithuania and Azerbaijan has intensified significantly
The political dialogue between Lithuania and Azerbaijan has intensified significantly over the last couple of years, Radvile Morkunaite-Mikuleniene, a Member of the Seimas, said while commenting on the meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries on May 8 in Vilnius.
She said that Lithuania closely follows the developments in the Southern Caucasus, hopes for a peaceful resolution of the conflict, and strongly supports the efforts of the EU and the US to facilitate the negotiations.
According to her, currently, Russia’s war against Ukraine is the most important factor to Lithuania’s national security. Lithuania continues to support Ukraine in all the ways possible so it could defeat the aggressor, which poses an existential and long-term threat to all the countries in the region. We stress the importance of international sanctions on Russia and its accomplice, Belarus, in order to limit their capacity to continue this unjustified and unprovoked war against a sovereign country. Lithuania underlines the need to prevent sanction circumvention via the territories of third states. I think respect for the rule of law, human rights, and fundamental freedoms – values European Union is founded on—should be a basis for Lithuania‘s and Azerbaijan's relations as well."
Radvile Morkunaite-Mikuleniene also emphasized that there are certainly areas in which Lithuania and Azerbaijan could further expand their relations, such as energy security and transition, environmental protection and climate change, tourism, transport, agriculture and food safety, culture, science and education, youth, and sport.
