Russian President Vladimir Putin appreciated the political wisdom of the national leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev and his point of view, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, SİA informs via News.ru.
According to Peskov, the Russian leader had warm relations with Aliyev, who would turn 100 on May 10.
“President Putin had very warm relations with Heydar Aliyev. He really respected Aliyev very much. They communicated frequently. Actually, it was then that the solid foundations of the current bilateral Russian-Azerbaijani relations were laid. The president continues the same relationship with Ilham Heydarovich. The foundation of what we have now was already laid then. Of course, it is difficult to overestimate the role of Heydar Aliyev in our common history, in the history of the Soviet Union. This role is really great,” Peskov emphasized.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin earlier said in an interview with Izvestia that it was possible to stop the acute phase of the conflict between Baku and Yerevan thanks to Putin's efforts. He stressed that the main principles of the settlement were formulated and implemented solely thanks to Russia's mediation mission.
According to Galuzin, throughout the conflict Russia tried to make concrete practical efforts to unblock transport and economic ties in the region, delimit the borders between countries, establish ties through public and parliamentary lines, as well as negotiate for a peace treaty.
