Explosion on highway as convoy of Attorney General of Bulgaria Geshev passes

An explosion occurred along a highway near Sofia as a motorcade was passing, one of which was carrying the Attorney General Ivan Geshev.

According to Bulgarian National Television, the explosion occurred between the city of Samokov and the Bulgarian capital around 11:45 (local time), SIA reports.

From preliminary analyses, the bomb blew up in front of one of the cars in the convoy, the Interior Ministry announced. Nobody was injured.

The Deputy Attorney General, Borislav Sarafov, explained that the explosion took place near a curve where vehicles slow down and caused a crater with a depth of 30-40 centimeters and a diameter of 3-4 meters. Sarafov says he is also convinced that the purpose of the detonation was to kill and not simply to intimidate.

The Bulgarian authorities have opened a terrorism investigation.
