Over 3000 guns surrendered in New York in exchange for gift cards

A statewide gun-buyback program took more than 3,000 weapons off New York’s streets Saturday, including a record-setting number in Syracuse, SIA refers to foreign media.

Officials in the upstate city said they netted 751 guns within hours, the most ever for similar buyback programs in any state municipality and among the 3,076 weapons collected during Attorney General Letitia James’ latest initiative.

The goal of the initiative is to reduce the number of guns in the hands of the population and thus the number of violent crimes committed with firearms. The police do not require any explanation from the people who surrender their weapons. Citizens are given a $500 gift card for one gun and a $150 gift card for each additional gun. In addition, there is also a prize for a 3D printed or antique weapon.

Currently, there are nine exchange points in the state, including two in New York City.
