Georgian Security Service arrests one of leaders of terrorist Islamic State
The Counter-Terrorist Center of the State Security Service of Georgia (SSG), through a special raid, detained Malkhaz Paksashvili, a Georgian citizen, on charge of being one of the commanders of the ISIS terrorist organization.
The investigation determined that the individual left Georgia in 2013, departed for Syria and joined the ISIS, SIA refers to the SSG.
In 2013-2015, holding the title of Naib (an Arabic word for ‘Deputy’ or ‘Representative of Authority’), Malkhaz Paksashvili actively participated in terrorist acts and military operations.
The detained Georgian citizen faces from 10 to 17 years in prison if convicted.
The detainee had close ties with the high-ranking military commanders of the Islamic State and held the position of the "naib” in one of the groups of the said terrorist organization.
The case is being investigated under Article 328 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which pertains to membership of a terrorist organization of a foreign country and assistance to terrorist activities. The crime is punishable by imprisonment from 10 to 17 years.
