In the first 40 days of 2023, China tripled its coal imports from Russia through the main Zabaikalsk-Manchuria border checkpoint, the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Harbin wrote on Telegram, SIA reports.
In this period, energy supply increased by 214% and exceeded 438,000 tons. In total, China bought 6.2 thousand wagons of coal from Russia.
According to the Consulate General, coal from Russia is used by China for power generation in the provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning and the eastern part of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region.
On February 8, coal export prices in the Far East ports and the European side of Russia began to stabilize. The gap between thermal coal prices in Far Eastern ports and the European part of the Russian Federation is narrowing against the backdrop of falling coal prices in Asia.
In January, Chinese authorities lifted the ban on coal imports from Australia. Prior to this, China, with increasing its purchases from Russia, Indonesia and the United States did not buy coal from Australia.
Experts also said that against the background of rumors about the lifting of the ban, Australia was able to push Russia out of the coal market.
Exporting Russian coal is further complicated by logistical difficulties. Due to supply problems, South Korea and Japan began to refuse contracts with Russian companies.
