UN Secretary General calls current geopolitical situation 'worse than at any time in his life'

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the current global geopolitical environment is worse than at any time in his lifetime, he wrote on his Twitter account, SIA refers to foreign media.

"We are facing the gravest levels of geopolitical division and mistrust in generations," the organization's secretary general said.

He also added that while at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he urged leaders to overcome divisions and restore alliance to promote peace, sustainable development and respect for human rights.

Guterres added that he was born after the Second World War (in 1949) and cannot remember the situation being any worse than it is now.

According to him, the planet is approaching the point of no return in terms of climate change. He emphasized that people seem to think they have 1.6 planets at their disposal.

The UN Secretary General recalled that the situation was not so difficult during the Cold War. The two geopolitical blocs followed the rules of the game. They tried to create as many problems as possible for each other, but they also used mechanisms to guarantee the end of the conflict when there was a serious threat.

Guterres noted that the mechanisms were used to control the spread of nuclear weapons. He added that now they have stopped working.

Earlier, the Secretary General of the UN said that he does not see any serious prospects for peace talks in Ukraine.
