Number of victims in residential building fire in Cheboksary increases

The number of people who died as a result of a fire in a residential building in Cheboksary, Chuvash Republic, has increased, SIA refers to emergency services.

In the apartment of a nine-storey building on 29 Shevchenko Street, a fire broke out on the second floor.

17 were injured, including 8 children, and all of them were hospitalized. Among the victims, two children, from one year to three months old, are in critical condition.

The open burning was eliminated by 15:00 (coinciding with Moscow time). Even before the first firefighters arrived, smoke completely engulfed the entrance to the last, ninth floor. The rescuers evacuated 26 people from the house.

The cause of the fire was reportedly "careless handling of the fire".

In addition, law enforcement officers said that the owner of the apartment has been detained. The officers took the owner to the police station, but they could not get an explanation from him as he was very drunk.

Earlier it was reported that there were ten victims, including six children. The fire took place in the house No. 29 on Shevchenko Street, on the second floor.
