The Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, held in the Azerbaijani capital for the ninth time, starts today in Baku, SİA informs.
Two free practice sessions will be held on the first day of the race, Friday. The program also includes test runs and qualifying for the Formula 2 series.
The Baku track, 306.049 km long, includes 20 turns, and the race consists of 51 laps.
The Formula 1 race was first held in Baku in 2016 under the name of the European Grand Prix, and since 2017, it has been known as the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Over the years, winners of the Baku Grand Prix have included Nico Rosberg (Germany), Daniel Ricciardo (Australia), Lewis Hamilton (Great Britain), Valtteri Bottas (Finland), Sergio Perez (Mexico), and Max Verstappen (Netherlands). Perez won here for the second time in 2023, and Oscar Piastri of McLaren won in 2024.
The 2020 Baku race was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has won qualifying for the past four years. Ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri (McLaren) leads the drivers' standings with 324 points.
His teammate Lando Norris is second (293), and Max Verstappen of Red Bull is third (230).
McLaren leads the Constructors' Championship with 617 points, followed by Ferrari (280) and Mercedes (260).
