IOC Calls on Russian athletes to abstain from Friendship Games participation

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law regarding the organization of the World Friendship Games in the Russian Federation.

The competition will take place from September 15 to 29 in Moscow and Yekaterinburg. It is reported that the number of participants in the games is 5,500, SIA reports with reference to Russian media.

Funds for the preparation and conduct of the games will be allocated from federal, regional, and local budgets, as well as from off-budget sources.

The total prize fund is estimated at 4.6 billion rubles. In addition, the project will present the concept of the International Friendship Association (IFA), which deals with sports cooperation between countries and promotes and popularizes the Games.

The idea of ​​holding the Friendship Games arose against the background of Russian athletes being excluded from international competitions after the start of special military operations in Ukraine.

The International Olympic Committee has already called on athletes to refrain from participating in the Friendship Games.
