The first 14 km section of the Muganli-Ismayilli-Gabala road is under construction

Reconstruction of Muganli-Ismayilli-Gabala section of Baku-Shamakhi-Muganli-Ismayilli-Gabala highway Construction work is underway on the first 14 km section of the project.

This was reported to SIA by the State Agency for Motor Roads.

This part of the road is considered to be the most geologically and hydrogeologically complex, landslide-prone part.

As part of anti-landslide measures to make the road long-lasting and sustainable, construction of pile retaining walls, drainage systems and other engineering works with a total length of 2.6 km is being carried out in 4 areas. The facilities are constructed according to the current normative loads, taking into account the 9-point seismicity.

The first 2 km of the road started before the local landslide area of the existing road before reaching Muganli settlement, and is being built bypassing the active landslide area on the descent from the settlement and beyond the settlement. As a result, the road to the Agsu River is shortened by 1.1 km, and in the part after the Agsu River by 1.4 km due to the new Agsu River bridge and tunnel.

Currently, earthworks and construction of a roadbed are underway in the first 7 km of the project. Also, engineering facilities, circular and rectangular culverts with a total length of more than 180 m are being built.

At the beginning of the project, it is planned to build a circle at the intersection with the existing road. Filling works are being carried out in the part that will be a circle, construction of rectangular water pipes is being carried out in order to ensure the transfer of water under the road in the area.

Work is underway to excavate the existing soil in the area to bring it down to the project level, and reinforcement works are being carried out to protect the slopes from erosion. For this purpose, special material is spread on the slopes, and a layer of fertile soil of the required thickness is applied to create greenery.

In order to ensure the stability of the soil against landslides on the 1-3 km section of the road, pile reinforcement and construction of concrete crossbars are being carried out. Also, in order to improve the quality of the soil in the area covering the 2nd km of the road, special cement mortar is being applied to the soil at a depth of 10 meters with high pressure.

A large suspension bridge 1135 meters long and 76.5 m high is being built at the intersection of Agsuchay and the river valley on the 4.5 km of the projected road. Drilling and piling works were carried out on the bridge piers, integrity and static tests of the piles, as well as construction of foundations on some of the piers. Currently, the construction of the bridge piers is underway.

The road will pass through a high mountain 865 meters long tunnel after the bridge over the Agsu River. Drilling works on the entrance and exit portal of the tunnel, as well as pile fastening works are nearing completion in the mentioned section. Due to the tendency of landslides in the area, the entrance portal of the tunnel is being fixed to the ground with the help of special cables. The slopes are reinforced with special material at the entrance and exit of the tunnel.

In addition, the project continues to build a drainage system with a total length of more than 4 km and the construction of mountain baths.

It should be noted that the reconstruction of this road, which goes to important tourist areas of the country and was first built in the 70s on the initiative of great leader Heydar Aliyev, was designed on the instructions of President Ilham Aliyev.

The Muganli-Ismayilli-Gabala road will be shortened by 9.7 km to 76.8 km as a result of reconstruction.The existing 2-lane road will be widened to 4 lanes.

The main objectives of the project include:

- Improving traffic intensity and road load capacity;

- Reduction of traffic accidents, travel time and transport costs;

- Accelerate economic growth and stimulate the development of trade relations with neighboring countries;

- Ensuring traffic safety for drivers and local residents;

- Expanding the potential of the region in the areas crossed by the highway;

- Development of tourism in the region.
