Azerbaijan, WHO sign donor agreement

The Republic of Azerbaijan and the World Health Organization (WHO) have signed a donor agreement at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, envisaging a $5 million allocation by Azerbaijan to the "COVID-19 appeal" fund as part of the WHO Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan (SPRP), SIA reports.

The document was inked by Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Vagif Sadigov and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The donation was announced by Azerbaijani President, chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Ilham Aliyev at an online Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement Contact Group in response to Covid-19 held on his initiative on May 4. The President said the donation would be made to provide support to member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement that are most in need of assistance.

At the signing ceremony, the WHO Director-General praised Azerbaijan's decision and the country's attention to the health sector, especially the fight against the COVID-19 at the international level.

Describing the voluntary financial contribution of Azerbaijan to the fight against COVID-19 as an example of global solidarity, Tedros Ghebreyesus expressed deep gratitude to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for the decision.

Permanent Representative Sadigov stressed that Azerbaijan attached great importance to cooperation with the WHO. He hailed the organization`s efforts to combat the COVID-19 virus globally. He also added that Azerbaijan applied the WHO recommendations regarding the pandemic.
