A conference entitled "Glimpse of the 21st Century: State, Society and Religion" has been held in Baku today, SIA reports. Chairman of the The State Committee on Religious Associations of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mubariz Gurbanli said that, despite religion had a strong influence on most fields of the society in the Middle Ages, today it has no such authority in the world: "Thus, religion doesn't have such a significant impact on the public administration and intra-community relations."
The Chairman of the Committee said that, firstly we have to stand on the calls and threats of the 21st century, when we give an attention to relationship between religion and society, the attitude of individuals to religion, there are differences between the challenges and threats of this century and previous one. Improving of the information technologies creates new menace. Today there are now 7.8 billion people on the earth, and the human growth is causing some problems, as well as shortages in natural resources, water, and food.Therefore, approximately 2 billion people suffer from malnutrition. All these cause mass migration of people, which bring about certain hazard to the world."
Mubariz Gurbanli emphasized that, significant changes have been made in family relationships: "Among people have a propensity being single. This creates certain problems.
According to him, Christian countries have occured some alteration in their manner about religion: "If 100 years ago there was a mass attendance of churches, now it does not show itself. Even churches are rented by the Christian communities in Scandinavian countries."
Mubariz Gurbanli underlined that, freedom of conscience have been provided by the Constitution of Azerbaijan. At the same time, secularism is the foundation of state-religion relations in Azerbaijan. The secularism influences on state governance. There are not any differences among religions in the constitution of Azerbaijan.
Speaking at the event, MP (Member of Parlament), Editor-in-Chief of the New Azerbaijan Newspaper Hikmet Babaoglu said, Islamophobia is one of the most widespread words in the world today: " this word was occured artificially and was placed in our subconscious.
He noted that, religion defines European politics today: "Thus the vast majority of ruling parties in Europe are conservatives, christian democrats, etc. Religion is still one of the most important components of the 21st century. The policy is pursued by the President of Azerbaijan can present a new model. There is tolerance and multiculturalism and religion is separate from the state, but the state is not separate from the religion in Azerbaijan, because every Azerbaijani who creates and manages the state is a religious bearer, and in the behavior and political decisions he (she) is not referring to national or social identity but also religious one. These components have created an ideal model for the triangle of religion, society and state in Azerbaijan. "
The conference has continued with the discussions of the regulation of the state-religion relations, the ongoing projects, the role and place of religion in the social life.
