The Baku Court of Appeal has reduced the prison sentence of Anass Derraz, vice-president of French company SAUR, from 12 years to 9 years.
According to SİA, the decision was made following an appeal filed by the defendant.
Derraz, along with former head of the French presidential security service Alexandre Benalla, is accused of demanding a large bribe from Russian billionaire of Azerbaijani origin Farhad Ahmadov. In exchange, they allegedly promised to lift the arrest on his yacht Luna and help him avoid international sanctions.
According to case materials, the parties agreed on a total bribe amount of $6.14 million. In November 2018, Ahmadov transferred $200,000 to Derraz's account and $400,000 to Benalla's account. It was further agreed that Ahmadov would transfer the remaining $5.54 million within 15 days after the yacht's release. A consultancy agreement was also signed between the parties.
Derraz is accused of aiding Benalla in receiving the bribe from Ahmadov.
Benalla has been placed on an international wanted list via Interpol with a "red notice."
