Azerbaijan has evacuated 14 Palestinian students from Gaza who earned the right to pursue higher education in the country under the “Heydar Aliyev International Education Grant” program, SİA reports, citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The evacuation process carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs began on September 17, and 10 of those students were already welcomed this morning at Heydar Aliyev International Airport. The remaining 4 are expected to be received in the coming hours. The removal of the students from Gaza and their transfer to Azerbaijan was carried out with the direct participation of Azerbaijan’s embassies in Israel and Jordan, as well as the support of our representative office in Palestine, through ongoing contacts and agreements reached with the relevant state authorities of Israel and Jordan.
The students who came to Azerbaijan were received by representatives of the relevant higher education institutions, organized by the Ministry of Science and Education, and were accommodated in dormitories.
Note that eight of the students were admitted to the grant program last year and six this year, based on nominations submitted by the State of Palestine. Ongoing hostilities and instability in Gaza had prevented the 2023 cohort from traveling earlier.
Following requests from the students and Palestinian authorities, Azerbaijan initiated efforts in May to facilitate their arrival. The students were transported by land from Gaza to Jordan and then flown from Amman to Baku.
