Mukhtar Babayev: Azerbaijan holds 16 bcm of water reserves in reservoirs
Azerbaijan currently has water reserves of 16 billion cubic meters in its reservoirs, said Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan's Presidential Envoy on Climate Issues, Report informs.
Babayev made the statement during the panel discussion titled "Leadership in Water Management: Regional and Global Perspectives," held as part of the 2nd International Water Management Exhibition and Conference – Baku Water Week.
He emphasized the importance of efficient use of these reserves:
"We must learn to use water resources properly. Azerbaijan is a country located downstream of rivers, so we always need to keep water issues on the agenda with our neighbors. Unfortunately, we cannot always reach full agreement because Azerbaijan is the only member of the Water Convention in the region, while other countries are not and are located upstream. Therefore, we must keep water matters under constant attention."
Babayev added that water management requires both national and regional approaches:
"Thus, when discussing water issues, it is important to consider not only the country but the entire region. We need to build stronger regional cooperation. Unfortunately, we have not yet reached the desired level of water consumption management. Serious programs must be developed and implemented in this area."
