Zangilan has been occupied for 26 years. Zangilan is the last district of Azerbaijan occupied by the Armenian armed forces. Although Zangilan was exposed to fatal attack, inhabitants did not obey the enemy and tens of innocent people were killed from 1988 to 1993. However, the dwellers of the region find the way to cross the Araz River to Iran, when Gubadli and Jabrayil surrounded by the enemy forces. Otherwise, a second Khojaly massacre would be inevitable. Zangilan was established in 1930 as an administrative district.
188 people were killed, 44 residents missed so far.
This region has great strategic importance due to located on the Baku-Julfa-Nakhchivan railway. territory covers an area of 707 square km and its population exceeded 35 thousand. The basis of the region's economy was agriculture, viticulture, tobacco and livestock production.
The largest evergreen plane-tree forest in Europe has been in this region. Now these plane-trees, are cut off and sold to foreign countries by the invader. Other valuable trees, molybdenum, marble, gold, granite and other natural resources were plundered by armenians.
Zangilan is rich with archeological and architectural monuments. The largest of these is the ruins of a medieval city known as "Shahri Sharifan".

Walnut, eastern plane and other valuable trees of the ''Topmeshe'' area were exposed to deforestation by armenian.
Armenians have repeatedly ignited the fires in the forests of Bartaz and Vejnali, burned the office building of the Forestry Department, and destroyed nearly 2 hectares of perennial walnut, plane and pine trees.
