Hajiyev: Normalization of ties with Armenia demonstrates Azerbaijan's commitment to regional peace
The normalization of relations with Armenia after years of war demonstrates Azerbaijan's commitment to peace and stability in the region, Hikmat Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration said at the General Assembly of the Global South NGO Platform, according to Report.
According to Hajiyev, Azerbaijan, as part of the Global South, has suffered from occupation and military aggression.
"Only six years ago, around 20% of our country's territory was under occupation. Azerbaijan endured foreign military aggression, occupation, the destruction of cultural monuments, ethnic cleansing, and large-scale devastation of cities," he noted.
He emphasized that nearly 13% of the country's territory remains contaminated with landmines today, calling it a heavy legacy of occupation.
"However, we were able to put an end to this, restore our sovereignty and territorial integrity, and begin a process of cooperation and engagement with neighboring Armenia," Hajiyev said.
According to him, this demonstrates Azerbaijan's goodwill, its commitment to peace, and its readiness to take responsibility for shaping new realities in the South Caucasus.
