Azerbaijan’s Academy of Sciences to expel Ramiz Mehdiyev from full membership

The leadership of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) has repeatedly expressed a firm position on expelling Ramiz Mehdiyev from full membership of the Academy, ANAS told SİA.

“We once again state that Ramiz Mehdiyev, who has been accused by the State Security Service of treason against the state and attempting to seize power by force, cannot remain a member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

The National Academy of Sciences will consider the issue of Ramiz Mehdiyev’s status as a full member of the Academy and will expel him from membership. The public will be informed about this.

The collective of the National Academy of Sciences strongly condemns the criminal acts that have occurred and states that they are unforgivable,” the statement said.

Note that the Sabail District Court of Baku has issued a decision in the criminal case against Ramiz Mehdiyev. Under the ruling, the court granted the motion regarding Ramiz Mehdiyev—who has been brought to criminal liability for particularly serious crimes—and imposed a preventive measure of house arrest for a period of four months. He is charged under Articles 278.1 (acts aimed at the violent seizure of state power), 274 (treason), and 193-1.3.2 (legalization of property obtained by criminal means) of the Criminal Code.

Ramiz Mehdiyev served as Head of the Presidential Administration from 1995 to 2019, and as President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences from 2019 to 2022.
