Prosecutor General urges stronger joint action on Caspian eco-crimes
For Caspian littoral states, it is essential to strengthen joint efforts in combating crimes against the Caspian Sea's ecology, Azerbaijan's Prosecutor General Kamran Aliyev said at the 6th Meeting of Prosecutors General of ECO Member States held in Tashkent, Report informs.
In his speech, Aliyev emphasized the role of prosecutorial bodies in upholding the rule of law in environmental protection, noting that ecological crimes have become a global issue. He highlighted Azerbaijan's initiatives in this area, particularly the successful hosting of COP29 in Baku and the adoption of the "Baku Call to Action," which has laid a significant legal foundation for regional and international cooperation.
Aliyev also stated that the Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan closely cooperates with state institutions to enforce environmental legislation, ensure remediation of environmental damage, and prioritizes experience-sharing with international partners.
During the event, the "Tashkent Declaration of the 6th Meeting of Prosecutors General of ECO Member States" was adopted. The declaration underscores the need to strengthen the role of prosecutorial bodies in combating crime-especially corruption and environmental offenses-enhance regional cooperation against cyber and financial crimes, and promote joint action for sustainable development and environmental protection.
As part of his visit, Aliyev held a bilateral meeting with his Tajik counterpart Habibullo Vohidzoda, discussing high-level relations between Azerbaijan and Tajikistan, cooperation among law enforcement agencies, and continued mutual support within international organizations. Both sides stressed the importance of joint efforts in combating transnational crime and other emerging challenges.
In a separate meeting with Iran's delegation, the parties discussed expanding existing cooperation between prosecutorial bodies, exchanging best practices, and effectively applying legal assistance mechanisms. They also emphasized the importance of joint steps to strengthen regional stability and combat terrorism, drug trafficking, and other transnational crimes.
Bilateral meetings also included productive exchanges on mutual legal assistance in criminal cases, extradition, asset recovery, anti-corruption efforts, and other topics of shared interest.
