Azerbaijani media began to perform their basic functions only after the country gained independence, and the foundations of independent media institutions were laid, the Executive Director of the Media Development Agency (MEDIA) Ahmad Ismailov said at the "The Social Processes in the Context of Media" forum held in Baku, Report informs.
Ismayilov noted that in this regard, the abolition of censorship in Azerbaijan by National Leader Heydar Aliyev created an opportunity for the expansion of pluralism and the development of journalism.
The executive director emphasized that the agency's goal in creating "The Social Processes in the Context of Media" platform was to support the establishment of healthy relations between media entities responsible for professional preparation and transmission of information and government agencies that act as a reliable source of information. At the same time, this also includes further raising the level of professionalism in the preparation of journalistic content of public interest.
He noted that this year Azerbaijan celebrates the 150th anniversary of the national press.
