Head of UK delegation to COP29 in Azerbaijan revealed

The UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Edward Samuel Miliband, will attend the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Trend reports via the Guardian.

"Ed Miliband will come to Azerbaijan in November to attend the COP29 climate summit. He will lead the UK delegation at the most important international climate talks and meet with political leaders from around the world," the publication reads.

According to the publication, the main agenda of the summit in Baku will be climate finance for developing countries to help them reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cope with the effects of extreme weather.

"Miliband has a proven track record at COP and on all issues related to these multilateral negotiations," the Guardian quoted former executive secretary of the UN Commission on Climate Change Christiana Figueres (now founding partner of the Global Optimism think tank).

Miliband served as the UK's energy and climate change minister from 2008 to 2010. He was appointed as the UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero on July 5, 2024.

This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive about 70–80,000 foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP - the Conference of the Parties - is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
