Azerbaijan plans Parliamentary Assembly within COP29 framework, strengthening climate action
Azerbaijan's National Assembly plans to organize a Parliamentary Assembly in collaboration with the Inter-Parliamentary Union within the framework of COP29.
SIA reports that this information was shared during a meeting between the President of the National Assembly, Sahiba Gafarova, and a delegation led by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Patricia Scotland.
It was noted that Azerbaijan maintains bilateral relations with members of the Union. Speaker Sahiba Gafarova highlighted that initiatives undertaken by Azerbaijan, at the behest of the President, within the Non-Aligned Movement have contributed to further enhancing the organization's influence and expanding cooperation among member states. It was emphasized that during Azerbaijan's presidency, special attention has always been paid to the needs of countries participating in the Non-Aligned Movement.
Sahiba Gafarova briefed the guests on the creation of the Movement's Parliament Network. She stated that since its establishment at the founding session in 2021, the Network has continued to grow and accept new members, with over half of the parliaments of the Non-Aligned Movement member states currently represented in the Network.
Patricia Scotland praised Azerbaijan's initiatives undertaken during its presidency of the Movement, emphasizing that Azerbaijan's presidency has provided good opportunities for the voices of small states to be heard.
During the discussions, it was also noted that Patricia Scotland is a member of the House of Lords of the United Kingdom, highlighting Azerbaijan's importance in relations with the United Kingdom and the dynamic development of bilateral cooperation in various fields.
The meeting also saw discussions on COP29, the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan this year. Speaker Sahiba Gafarova emphasized that within the framework of COP29, Azerbaijan's National Assembly plans to organize a Parliamentary Assembly in collaboration with the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which will serve as a multifaceted parliamentary contribution to climate action.
The meeting also involved exchanges of views on other mutually interesting issues.
