CEC concludes presidential elections: Ilham Aliyev wins with 92% of votes
During today's session of the Central Election Commission (CEC), the discussion centered around finalizing the results of the extraordinary presidential election held on February 7, 2024. The key agenda item was the submission of the CEC protocol on the election results, along with pertinent documents, to the Constitutional Court, SIA reports.
Rovzet Gasimov, the Deputy Chairman of the CEC, stated that candidates were afforded all necessary legal provisions and equal opportunities to present their platforms to voters once the elections began. The pre-election campaign subjects experienced no obstacles in utilizing resources, and the overall pre-election environment adhered to modern standards of freedom. Notably, the CEC invalidated the results of the presidential elections in several regions, leading to the release of regional election commissions from their duties.
All necessary measures were taken to ensure the legality of the voting process, and voters demonstrated high activity. The installation of web cameras in 1,000 polling stations covering the entire geography of the Republic provided opportunities for "online" monitoring of the elections on the voting day. The CEC expressed gratitude to the National Assembly, the Cabinet of Ministers, several ministries and committees, and mass media for fulfilling their responsibilities in ensuring the legality of the elections.
CEC Chairman Mezahir Panakhov, recalling the requirement of Article 203.1 of the Electoral Code, emphasized that the CEC must finalize the elections within 10 days from the voting day and submit the results for approval to the Constitutional Court.
Then, the Chairman acquainted the CEC members with the text of the draft decision on submitting to the Constitutional Court for approval the protocol of the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the results of the extraordinary presidential elections held on February 7. The Chairman of the Commission requested the members' opinions on the draft decision. The members of the Central Election Commission voted in favor of the decision and signed the Protocol. The Central Election Commission decided that the results of the presidential elections should be finalized by approving the Protocol of the Central Election Commission and submitting it to the Constitutional Court. A decision was also made to submit the Protocol of the Central Election Commission along with the relevant documents to the Constitutional Court for approval of the election results. The decision to publish the Protocol of the Central Election Commission was also adopted.
According to the results determined by the Commission, Ilham Aliyev won 92.12% of the votes (4,567,458 votes) of the participating voters in the elections, thus being re-elected as the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The voter turnout in the extraordinary presidential elections was 76.43%.
