Turkish Parliament speaker: PACE should be unifying, not divisive platform
Speaker of the Turkish Parliament Numan Kurtulmus has condemned the biased decision of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) to suspend the powers of the Azerbaijani delegation, Report informs.
Kurtulmus’ statement was published on the official page of the Turkish Parliament.
“The Grand National Assembly (Parliament) of Türkiye calls on PACE to resolutely defend the principles it supports, to be a unifying rather than divisive platform, and to assert the authority of the Azerbaijani delegation,” reads the statement.
Kurtulmus noted that he is disappointed with the PACE decision regarding Azerbaijan, and expects its revision in the very near future.
The politician reminded that Azerbaijan has been a member of the Council of Europe since 2001, and over the years of cooperation with the organization it has not only made a significant contribution to the implementation of its basic principles, but also played a leading role in preserving cultural diversity and promoting intercultural dialogue.
“In the context of growing geopolitical tensions throughout the world, political strife and conflicts, multilateral diplomacy should not lose its strength and position. PACE should remain a platform for dialogue and cooperation, and not turn into a conflict zone,” reads the statement.
In 2001 Azerbaijan became a full member of the Council of Europe and PACE. On January 24, 2024, some European parliamentarians made absurd accusations against the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE, calling into question its powers. Taking this into account, the Azerbaijani delegation circulated a detailed statement to PACE. Against the background of the existing atmosphere of racism, Azerbaijanophobia and Islamophobia in the Parliamentary Assembly, the Azerbaijani delegation decided to suspend cooperation with PACE and participation in the organization for an indefinite period.
The delegation left the hall after the announcement of the statement.
