“As indigenous peoples of French Polynesia, we are torn apart from our history, language and traditions” - Member of French National Assembly
“As indigenous peoples of Polynesia, we are disconnected from our history, language, and traditions, and we face similar struggles,” Steve Chailloux, the French Polynesian politician, member of the French National Assembly, participant of the colloquium titled "Truth Commission on the indigenous population of Guiana" co-organized by the IFJD-Institut Louis Joinet at the National Assembly, told SIA.
"I was deeply moved by what I heard from our Guianese brothers and sisters because we have endured similar hardships. Even today, we continue to face the consequences. Having been subjected to colonial influences that have altered us, it remains challenging for indigenous peoples to reclaim their identity,” added Steve Chailloux.
